Engraving Imagery
The Studio at Corning Museum of Glass
September 4-9, 2023 and June 17-22, 2024
Engraving skills will be presented using both lathe turned wheels and micro motor driven burs along with the potential of combining these skills in finished artwork. New techniques will be presented daily, with time to practice skills and work on individual artwork. Students will have the opportunity to work with cameo, intaglio, or color overlay projects according to their interest. Supporting topics to include design, use and care of each tool, various engraving materials, choosing glass, and finishing your work. An educational Museum visit will help to visualize and reinforce classroom topics.
Cameo Glass: “Hot Bits & Cold Cuts”

Create cameo blanks using several glassblowing applications including overlays and graal. Instruction will be provided on all engraving and cutting tools available in the Cold Shop: wheels, burs, and sandblasting. Individual practice time will be scheduled in both hot and cold studios. Students will have the option to finish their work using classic cold polishing, or return to the hot shop to fire polish, expand and reshape their engraved glass. The course will include discussions of historical references, hot and cold demos, and critiques. Visiting artists will provide additional presentations.

You will be introduced to both lathe turned wheel and micro motor driven bur engraving techniques. This class is a great opportunity to learn the basics of each tool, or advance your knowledge of engraving as desired. You will learn about the operation and maintenance of a lathe as well as diamond, stone and copper wheels, then use each wheel to engrave glass. In addition, you will learn to engrave using a micro motor with diamond, stone and rubber burs. Supporting topics include design, advantages and limitations of each tool, choosing glass, and finishing your work. Techniques in cameo, intaglio, and color overlay engraving will be presented with practice blanks available to explore each material. A new topic and skill will be presented each day with time to practice skills and engrave individual artwork. Instruction will be individualized to your level of experience as needed. Come prepared with reference materials, images and drawings to use as design elements.

Want to learn to engrave, but not sure which tool suits your style? Students will be introduced to both lathe turned wheel and micromotor driven bur engraving skills. This class is a great opportunity to learn the basics with each tool. Students will be introduced to the operation and maintenance of a portable engraving lathe and the copper, stone and diamond wheels used to cut the glass. In addition, students will learn skills using a dremel or micromotor with diamond, stone and rubber burs. Supporting topics include the recent history of glass engraving, design advantages and limitations of each tool, choosing glass, and finishing your work. Cameo, intaglio, and color overlay engraving will be introduced with practice blanks available to explore each material. New topics and skills will be presented each day with time to practice and add new skills to your class project. Instruction will be individualized to the level of each student’s experience as needed. Come prepared with reference materials of images and drawings to use as design elements.

I was honored to receive an Award of Excellence for this piece from juror Dr. Jutta-Annette Page.
My dear friend Patti loved yellow roses. So, you could say that she designed this piece. The vessel was created from lead glass billets requiring multiple kiln firings and processes. A silhouette of the rose design was revealed after removing the background cameo layer by sand carving. The elements of the design were then modeled by stone wheel engraving using a traditional lathe. Wheel engraving is a deliberate and intimate process. It was a gratifying experience to bring these roses to life.
